San Bruno’s new spot for intriguing Filipino favorites

In San Bruno, Cali is now open in the former Tribu Grill spot under different owners, but Filipino favorites are still being served. Start with the intriguing surf-and-turf sinuglaw, which consists of salt-and-pepper-rubbed pork belly and raw yellow fin tuna chunks. A sisig of milkfish or pork on a sizzling platter is a must, and the fried rice-based binagoongan — with pork, mangoes, tomatoes, scrambled eggs and shrimp sauce — is the house specialty, plus enormous fun to mix together yourself. A menu of $5.99 lunch specials sweetens the experience, as does one of the classic desserts like frozen brazo de Mercedes.

Burlingame

The city has a new destination for raw fish with the opening of Sushi Sada, courtesy of the ex-owners of San Francisco’s Nagano Sushi. The site features an open kitchen, small sushi bar and compact dining area with granite tables and a room-length mirror. Along with the standard fare, Sada presents specialty rolls, plus options for those wishing to stay fish-free, like chicken teriyaki.

Redwood City

The beloved Donato Enoteca is celebrating the November white truffle windfall with a special four-course, $195 tasting menu. It’s showcasing those precious tartufo bianco on a selection of pasta, and a pork fillet main course with sunchoke puree. Unless the weather in Piemonte, Italy, stays sunny into December, the special menu ends Nov. 24.

Los Gatos

The Santa Cruz Mountains town continues to add to its strong food-and-drink scene, with another destination restaurant to complement David Kinch’s already well-known Manresa. No one will mistake Los Gatos for Brooklyn, but the South Bay is now home to Angelo Womack, formerly pizzaiolo at Bushwick’s acclaimed Roberta’s. Womack’s wife, Dana, is the sister of Ross Hanson, executive chef at the recently closed Restaurant James Randall, and the team opened Oak & Rye in that restaurant’s former space. Womack’s pizzas, including a nod to Gotham City’s Commissioner Gordon with Nueske’s bacon and arugula, are the headliner. However, the rest of the menu isn’t just a side dish. It features small plates such as Skuna Bay salmon with red grapes, pine nuts and basil, and two “large” dishes such as a 16 oz. dry-aged rib eye. As you could guess from the name, rye whiskey is the drink program’s focus, along with a dozen Italian wines all served as $13 8-ounce quartinos or $40 bottles.
