San Bruno police arrest third suspect involved in shooting at officer Saturday morning

Police have arrested a third suspect linked to an early morning police pursuit Saturday in which one of the suspects fired a gun at a San Bruno police officer, police said.

San Bruno resident Daniel Garcia, 23, was arrested hours after fleeing the scene of the shooting, where two other San Bruno men, Michael Apolinario 25, and 18-year-old Diego Bernal were arrested for their alleged involvement in the shooting, police said.

Police received a report around 1:45 a.m. Saturday of multiple people walking up San Bruno Avenue near 4th Avenue, police said.

Officers arriving on the scene spotted a car with multiple occupants leaving the area.

Police said an officer tried to stop the car on 3rd Avenue near Belle Air School, where the suspects stopped, exited the vehicle and fled.

When the officer chased one of the suspects, he turned and fired a handgun at the officer. Unharmed, the officer returned fire, but it is unknown whether any of the suspects were hit, according to police.

Arriving officers set up a perimeter around the area, located Apolinario and Bernal and arrested them.

The San Mateo Gang County Task Force, San Mateo County Narcotics Task Force and the Oakland Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation assisted San Bruno police in tracking Garcia down in South San Francisco later Saturday, police said.

Police believe the three San Bruno men were involved in gang activity when officers spotted them Saturday morning.
