Reported deal between Giants, free-agent Ted Lilly falls through

A reported minor-league deal with free-agent left-handed pitcher Ted Lilly and the Giants fell through Tuesday after Lilly couldn’t pass a physical.

The Giants had pursued a deal with Lilly, who is battling chronic neck pain, after his release from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday and he was expected to report to Triple-A Fresno on Tuesday. Lilly, 37, has won 113 games, posting a career 4.14 ERA in 14 big-league seasons.

"You're talking about an experienced major-league pitcher who's had a real nice career, so it made sense for us," manager Bruce Bochy said. "Unfortunately, because of the physical, it's not going to happen."

Zito honored: Barry Zito won the 2013 Lou Gehrig Memorial Award on Tuesday for his work with wounded war veterans.

The award is given annually to the Major League Baseball player who best exemplifies Gehrig's giving character.

Zito founded Strikeouts For Troops after the 2004 season, providing assistance to troops injured in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Funds raised through Strikeouts for Troops helps veterans buy adaptive equipment for their homes, purchase holiday presents for their children and it pays for posttraumatic stress disorder research and treatment.

"It's a huge honor," Zito said. "Lou Gehrig's name is one that brings to mind a special feeling for most people, including myself."

See you in September: Angel Pagan is recovering from hamstring surgery in Arizona and Bochy said he could suit up with the big club "around the first of September."

Bochy said Pagan is running the bases, swinging the bat and "doing other baseball activities" right now.

"He feels good where he's at right now," Bochy said.

Pagan has been out of the Giants' lineup since he injured his hamstring on May 25.
