Authorities are on the lookout for a suspect in the weekend slaying — the first this year in this part of unincorporated Redwood City — of a 22-year-old man.
San Mateo County Sheriff's Deputies arrived at about 10:30 p.m. Sunday outside an apartment complex at 549 Hampshire Ave. after someone reported hearing gunshots in the area.
Deputies found Redwood City resident Jaime Tejada lying outside the complex with a gunshot wound.
Emergency personnel from the Redwood City Fire Department pronounced him dead soon thereafter.
Sheriff's Office Lt. Lisa Williams says he believes Tejada had a friend who lived in the Hampshire apartment complex. She wasn't sure if Tejada had gotten into a fight with someone beforehand, but noted that investigators are still looking into whether this was a gang-related incident.
This is the third homicide in North Fair Oaks since 2002, Williams said. There have already been several fatal shootings in incorporated Redwood City this year, including one incident in April outside a bar on Second Avenue that left three people dead. In March, a man was shot in the head while standing in a carport on Rolison Road.
Witnesses describe the shooter as a tall, thin Hispanic male in his early 20s. Deputies couldn't locate a getaway car or speculate on a motive.
The Sheriff's Office asks anyone with information about the incident to call Det. Rich Maher at (650) 363-4055 or the Sheriff's Office Anonymous Witness Line at (800) 547-2700.
