Rec and Park is about $3.4 million away from Mayor Gavin Newsom’s mandated budget cuts.
Park officials have accounted $11.8 million worth of budget reductions, mostly by relying on generating more revenue, but they’re still $3.4 million shy of what’s been mandated.
So far about $3.6 million of the $11.8 million cut is through actual reductions – including laying off or converging 45 positions and decreasing rec facility hours – while the rest is left to new funding ideas like push carts and possible camping in Golden Gate Park.
Newsom’s mandated cuts initially required Rec and Park to shave $12.4 million off their budget, but that number increased to $15.2 when Newsom said all city departments needed a bigger budget axe and asked their leaders to take a 10 percent pay hack.
Director of Administration Katie Petrucione will present her report on the current status of the budget at Rec and Park’s regular meeting on Thursday.
Park officials have to adopt a budget by July 1.
