Rec and Park Commission retreat is close to home

The Recreation and Park Commission is playing hooky next week during its regular meeting for a full-day retreat to talk about next year’s major goals.

General Manager Phil Ginsburg http://www.sfexaminer.com/local/New-parks-chief--brings-job-online-50591207.html remained vague about specific ambitions but assured he would have a full report for the next meeting in October.

Ginsburg did say he wants to improve the quality of parks – from financial capacity to environmental stewardship – and focus on a support system that includes major communication among multiple city players.

“We have spent some time already coming up with (the goals) and I think one of the biggest challenges is making sure that communication travels horizontally and vertically,’’ he said.

And while the word “retreat” often implies money, a thrifty commission decided to take their ideas to Golden Gate Park.

“We’re not spending any money. It’s not a fancy-shmancey thing,’’ he said. “It’s very hard to get everyone together to talk about our major goals.”

The next regular meeting is scheduled for October 15 at 4p.m.
