FAVORITE VIEW OF THE CITY

Golden Gate Bridge

WHERE:
Northwest edge of The City

WHAT: Graceful red smile welcoming everyone to the Bay

INFO: www.goldengatebridge.org

I like how you can see Alcatraz on a clear day, but it’s also great to feel the fog roll in and cover you in tiny pinpricks of moisture.

FAVORITE PLACE TO BUY PIRATE PARAPHERNALIA

826 Valencia

WHERE:
826 Valencia St., at 19th Street

WHAT: Nonprofit that helps kids express themselves

INFO: (415) 642-5905 or 826valencia.org

Yo ho ho and avast, matey. The Pirate Store is the place for all things pirate. And the proceeds go to teaching writing skills to kids 6-18, so you can’t go wrong. Poke around, open the drawers and cupboards, and rifle through everything!

FAVORITE CHOCOLATE

Ghirardelli Chocolate

WHERE:
900 North Point St., at Larkin Street

WHAT: Best chocolate delights ever

INFO: (415) 474-3938 or www.ghirardelli.com

You can find me at the ice cream fountain at Ghirardelli Square a lot, devouring chocolate ice cream with chocolate syrup. I mean, if you’re going to have ice cream at Ghirardelli, make it chocolate!

FAVORITE CLOTHING STORE

Old Navy

WHERE:
801 Market St., at Fourth Street

WHAT: Clothing that actually fits me

INFO: (415) 344-0375 or www.oldnavy.gap.com

I wear a size 12 slim children’s, and it’s hard to find jeans that look good on me, but Old Navy has these skinny jeans that fit perfectly and look great. I am forever grateful for whoever designed these.

FAVORITE ITALIAN RESTAURANT

Piazza Pellegrini

WHERE
: 659 Columbus Ave., at Filbert Street

WHAT: Indoor and outdoor dining in North Beach

INFO:
(415) 397-7355 or www.piazzapellegrini.com

Everything here is delicious, but I cannot get enough of the spinach ravioli. And if I still have room, their tiramisu is to die for.

FAVORITE HISTORIC SITE

Alcatraz Island

WHERE:
Island in the middle of the Bay

WHAT: Former federal penitentiary

INFO: (415) 561-4900 or www.nps.gov/alcatraz

Creepy, haunted, chilling, inspiring, saddening, amazing. I visit The Rock every chance I get. It’s easy to catch the ferry at Pier 33 — you just have to maneuver through the tourists.

FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP FOR BOOKS

Japantown

WHERE:
1610 Geary Blvd., at Webster Street

WHAT: A little bit of Japan in S.F.

INFO: (415) 567-4573 or www.sfjapantown.org

The bookstores at Japantown have extensive collections of manga and anime books, comics, DVDs and other stuff. When I’m not reading manga and anime, I can still flaunt my obsession with my anime book bag.

FAVORITE ANNUAL EVENT

Pride

WHERE:
Market Street and Civic Center

WHAT: Annual celebration of all things LGBT

INFO: (415) 864-0831 or www.sfpride.org

The parade and party at Civic Center are huge! There are rainbows everywhere and you feel real supported.

FAVORITE CITY WALK

Chinatown

WHERE:
Grant Street, between Bush and Broadway streets

WHAT: China in America

INFO: www.sanfranciscochinatown.com

It feels like you’re in China when you’re there. San Francisco’s Chinatown is a foreign country where a lot of people don’t speak English, especially in the side streets and alleys. Great shopping if you need to buy souvenirs.
