An investigation into allegations that several San Francisco Public Utilities Commission employees used city computers for online gambling and distributing pornography should conclude shortly, agency officials said.

The SFPUC confirmed that it and the City Attorney’s Office are investigating allegations that a number of supervisors and employees in two divisions misused city resources.

“There is an active investigation into alleged misuse of city resources for online gambling and pornography,” agency spokesman Tyrone Jue said Friday.

The investigation started with a whistle-blower, Jue said. He said he could not comment on the exact number of workers being probed. The SFPUC’s human resources department and top officials are part of the investigation, he said.

“We are really taking this seriously,” Jue said.

Jue would not comment on what punishment workers could face, but The City’s employee handbook says termination is an option.

The handbook cites computers and Internet access, among other items, as San Francisco property that is for business purposes only. The handbook also says inappropriate use of city resources includes online gambling and viewing or distributing materials that are sexually explicit.
