PHOTOS: Mayor Ed Lee inaugurated amid City Hall celebration

It was a full house at City Hall Sunday morning, as thousands turned out to witness the inauguration of Ed Lee, the first elected Asian-American mayor in San Francisco’s history.

The party atmosphere of music, dance and other fanfare continued well after the 11 a.m. event, in which U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein -- the only woman to ever serve as mayor of The City -- administered Lee’s oath of office.

Former Mayor Willie Brown emceed the event with light-hearted commentary and jokes, drawing big laughs from the crowd gathered in the expansive rotunda, where all surviving mayors of The City were seated to witness the occasion.

In his inaugural speech, Lee delivered more serious comments about his plans for San Francisco’s future. As expected, Lee said new jobs for The City are his top priority.

The mayor predicted some would call the platform boring.

“But that’s okay, as long as we’re getting things done, I don’t mind being called boring,” Lee said.

The mayor also took the opportunity to announce a new initiative to create a “permanent housing trust fund” to go before voters on the November 2012 ballot.

The event was also attended by mayors of other cities, including Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles, Jean Quan of Oakland and Kasim Reed of Atlanta. U.S. Reps. Nancy Pelosi and Jackie Speier also attended, along with the Bay Area’s Sacramento contingent and 10 members of the Board of Supervisors – seated in the front row.

Ross Mirkarimi, the outgoing supervisor who was privately inaugurated as sheriff Saturday night, was conspicuously absent. Mirkarimi, who is set to be publicly sworn in later today,  is facing a District Attorney’s Office investigation into whether he should be charged with domestic violence against his wife.
