Parents reach out to SoMa leaders

The City stands to lose 100 childcare spots next year after Children’s Village received an eviction notice, according to Jim Meko of the SoMa Leadership Council.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese plans to shutter the Children’s Village at the site of the old St. Joseph’s Church South of Market. Parents were notified that the center will close in June of 2010. Catholic Charities, a longtime supporter of the Center, has had a change in mission, while the Church seeks to sell the building, according to Meko.

Parents hoping to negotiate with the Archdiocese to extend the lease have reached out to Supervisor Chris Daly, Mayor Gavin Newsom, unions, Catholic Donors and neighborhood associations. They will present a report next week at the SoMa Leadership Council Wednesday. The 6 p.m. meeting will be held at The Arc of San Francisco, 180 11th St., Second Floor.
