A man and woman were arrested Sunday evening after a chase that started in San Francisco’s Portola neighborhood, continued onto Interstate Highway 280 and ended in the city’s Potrero Hill neighborhood, police said.
Officers responded to a report of a fight involving a gun at a gas station at the intersection of San Bruno Avenue and Dwight Street at about 5:50 p.m. Sunday.
Police saw a van driven by a woman speeding out of the gas station and pursued it as the driver ran several stop signs.
The car briefly stopped at Brussels and Bacon streets so the driver and her male passenger could switch seats, police said.
The van eventually went onto Highway 280 where it stopped suddenly at one point, almost causing a crash, according to police.
The driver then exited the highway at 25th and Indiana streets and continued until the van finally stopped on a hill at 25th and Dakota streets.
The man and woman then got out of the car and ran in different directions. They left the van in gear, and it started rolling backward at an officer who was trying to secure it, police said.
The officer was able to slow down the van until police cleared an area at the bottom of the hill where children were playing. The vehicle then crashed into the concrete staircase of an apartment building, according to police.
No one was injured in the crash.
Other officers at the scene apprehended both suspects and found cocaine in the man’s possession, and more cocaine and heroin in the van, police said.
Merchandise stolen from the gas station at San Bruno Avenue and Dwight Street was also found in the car, although no gun was found, according to police.
The man and woman, whose names were not immediately available, were booked on various charges at the Bayview Station.
