While Energy Team ruled the waters of Italy, this past week, capturing the Venice leg of the America’s Cup World Series on Sunday, Oracle Racing accomplished exactly what it set out to do.

The San Francisco-based defending America’s Cup champions, skippered by Jimmy Spithill, increased their overall series lead by four points over Emirates Team New Zealand with just one event left in the AC World Series. Artemis Racing is in third overall, 13 points behind Spithill and Co.

“We came here with a one-point lead over Emirates Team New Zealand. We’re leaving with a four-point lead,” Spithill told www.americascup.com. “That’s the important thing. I’m happy with how the team did.”

Energy Team held off Oracle on Sunday on a day where winds were very light, leading to teams quickly moving up and down the leaderboard on the first lap of the race.

The final event of the 2011-12 AC World Series will take place in Newport, R.I., from June 26-July 1.

The next AC World Series, the 2012-2013 version, kicks off Aug. 21 in San Francisco Bay.
