The “number one issue” in discussions to reduce The City’s more than half-billion-dollar deficit projected for next fiscal year is labor, Mayor Gavin Newsom said Tuesday.
But don’t plan on seeing a labor fight play out in the media, he said.
“That’s not going to be done publicly,” he said. “It’s going to be done deliberatively, behind the scenes.”
Discussions with labor leaders began more than a month ago, Newsom said, though he did not reveal the results of those talks.
“[I said to labor leaders] we need you guys to participate, step up. To the extent they don’t, which I respect, then there’ll be more layoffs. It’s not threatening, it’s just factual. There’s no other way to get there.”
