Today is a new milestone for the 146-year-old San Francisco Examiner, with Todd Vogt assuming the role of publisher, president and co-owner of the newspaper.

“The Examiner has a long history of covering San Francisco in a way that no other news organization does,” Vogt said. “Today, we will take what is truly the only local newspaper in San Francisco and advance its quality coverage of news, sports, and arts and entertainment for the people who live and work here.”

The transition comes after Clarity Media sold the paper to a consortium led by Vogt and industry veteran David Black, CEO of the Black Press Group, which produces more than 170 newspapers in North America and maintains 100 Internet sites. Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Pat Brown is also a co-owner of the paper.

With Vogt living in San Francisco, the newspaper will also once again be locally controlled.

“San Francisco is a vibrant and thought-leading city,” said Vogt. “While the other newspaper in The City says it is local, it long ago stopped reporting on issues that truly matter to this dynamic community. Its lackluster approach to local news only highlights the bold approach The SF Examiner takes in selecting and presenting stories that speak to San Franciscans.”

Vogt succeeds John Wilcox, who served as publisher for more than five years.

The San Francisco Examiner is a free six-day-a-week newspaper that is circulated in San Francisco and San Mateo counties and at transit stations around the Bay Area. Before being purchased by Clarity Media Group in 2004, the paper was owned by the Fang family, which bought the paper from the Hearst Corp.

The newspaper will continue to be a free newspaper distributed in news racks and delivered to homes.

Earlier reports indicating that the Examiner would become part of the Black Press Group were erroneous.
