New bike share kiosks await approval

A bicycle sharing conglomerate could be setting up kiosks in Golden Gate Park, on the Marina Green and in Justin Herman Plaza soon.

Action to approve a lease that will allow ParkWide LLC to operate a master bike rental concession in city parks is on the agenda for the new Recreation and Park Operations committee that will meet for the first time Thursday in City Hall in Room 416 at 2 p.m.

For years, Mayor Gavin Newsom and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency have attempted a similar program citywide, but that program is still in the planning stages.

An owner of ParkWide LLC — operated by three local companies — said in May that they plan to start with the three open spaces then possibly move onto Union Square, Civic Center and other parks, too.

According to the committee, the lease for the program, which is estimated to bring in at least $100,000 for Rec and Park in the first year, will also have to get a final vote from the Board of Supervisors.
