New BART stop’s fares in works

It could cost $10.80 for passengers from The City to travel round-trip to BART’s newest station, and nearly $21 for a two-way ticket from that spot to the San Francisco International Airport.

The transit agency’s 44th station will open up next year on a stretch of Interstate 580 in the East Bay. Situated between the Castro Valley and Dublin/Pleasanton stations, which are 10 miles apart, the depot will be called the West Dublin/Pleasanton station, and BART officials are in the midst of determining fare costs for travel to the new location.

Early projections have fares costing $5.40 for a one-way ticket from stations in San Francisco to the new West Dublin/Pleasanton stop, and $10.40 for a one-way trip from SFO.

BART based those figures on the same cost formula it uses to determine fares at other stations, including for the nearby Dublin/Pleasanton location, which has a $5.55 one-way fare to The City.

At its board of directors meeting today, BART will hold a public hearing on its fare proposals for the new station. Also, the agency will gather feedback on its preliminary recommendations for fees at the West Dublin/Pleasanton parking lot, which will have 1,190 spaces.

The agency has proposed a $1 daily fee for parking, a rate that is the same at several other stations, including both Castro Valley and Dublin/Pleasanton. The public hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. at BART’s headquarters in Oakland.

Slated to open early next year, the $80 million West Dublin/Pleasanton station is expected to have 6,000 daily trips, including 3,600 that will be new to the BART system. The station, funded through a private-public partnership, is set to be the focus of a new transit-oriented development site that will include 210 housing units, office spaces and a hotel.

Depending on the outcome of today’s public hearing, the BART board could vote to finalize the new station’s fare prices at its Oct. 28 meeting. The parking fees would be finalized Dec. 2.
