If you’ve ever wished you had remembered to bring a book to read on the train, BART has the answer for you.
Today, the transit agency will unveil the “Free 2 Read & Ride” book-lending machine at the Millbrae station.
Available for use to anyone with a Peninsula library-system card, the vending machine on the station’s concourse level will allow customers to pick up a book on their way to and from their trains.
A similar machine, called Library-a-Go-Go, was placed at the Pittsburg/Bay Point station in May 2008, but this will be the first such dispensary at a Peninsula BART station.
In addition to borrowing texts, riders will be able to sign up for library cards at the machine’s official launch today, which is set to take place at 10:30 a.m.
BART Director Joel Keller will be attending, along with state and local officials, including San Mateo County Board of Supervisors President Carole Groom, state Librarian Stacey Aldrich and Millbrae Mayor Daniel Quigg.
