Sparky’s

WHERE: 242 Church St., between 15th and Market streets
WHAT: Chocolate malts prepared properly
INFO: (415) 626-8666 or www.sparkysdinersf.com

They do chocolate malts right with vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup and malt powder. And they give you the mixing canister with excess beverage. Very important.

FAVORITE BOOKSTORE
Green Apple Books
WHERE:
506 Clement St., at Sixth Avenue
WHAT: Solid recommendations, good travel book and map selection
INFO: (415) 387-2272 or www.greenapplebooks.com

Cozy wood decor, funky recommendation notes from staff, and a great selection of travel books and maps. It has made me late returning from lunch many a workday.

FAVORITE PLACE TO PEOPLE WATCH
28-19th Avenue Muni bus
WHERE:
Inbound toward the Marina; outbound toward Daly City BART
WHAT: See tourists experiencing city mainstays for the first time

It’s always fun to see tourists wowed by their first views of the Golden Gate, Alcatraz and the Marina.

Grace Cathedral

WHERE: 1100 California St., between Taylor and Jones streets
WHAT: It has a labyrinth
INFO: (415) 749-6300 or www.gracecathedral.org

A neo-Gothic church with a labyrinth, modeled after Chartres Cathedral in France, where I go when I need my French fix.

Eclectic mix of local and international artists in a relaxed, subterranean spot.

I love the bronco chicken with black beans and homemade tortilla chips.

Great, old-timey theater with a neighborhood feel to it. [Editor’s note: The theater has been in existence since 1908.]
