Most Popular Democrat for Gov? Feinstein

If she decided to run for governor in 2010, U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein -- The City’s mayor between 1978 and 1988 -- would beat our current Mayor Gavin Newsom in the Democratic primary, according to a new poll.

That shouldn’t make likely Democratic candidate Attorney General Jerry Brown feel all that comfortable -- he also trailed Feinstein in a random telephone survey of 1,005 registered voters released Thursday.

When voters were asked whom they would favor if Feinstein joined the governor’s race, the senator received 40 percent of “Democratic primary voter preferences, compared to 27 percent for Brown and 16 percent for Newsom,” according to the Field Poll.

“This is a somewhat smaller advantage than Feinstein held earlier in the year when the field was larger,” surveyors said.

Feinstein won the Democratic primary for California governor in 1990, but lost in the general election to Pete Wilson.
