Sometimes an event touted as “Once in a lifetime!” becomes so popular, it just keeps right on expanding.
So it may come as no surprise, then, that today at 10 a.m., our Bay Area metal monsters Metallica will — through their website — be hawking early fan club tickets to a second stateside “Big Four” concert, featuring the historic lineup of themselves, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. Who indeed were the top stylistic trailblazers when post-Maiden/Saxon/Krokus rock morphed into speed metal up in the mid-’80s.
This show (which follows their April 23 onslaught in Indio) will rattle the foundations of New York’s Yankee Stadium on Sept. 14.
And admittedly, it’s a brilliant concept to see these bands together at one venue. The idea was conceived last year, when all four took part in the same seven Sonisphere Festival shows across Europe, at which point they agreed to stage an initially one-off “Big Four” performance in Indio.
But why pull the plug on a really good thing?
They’ll return to Europe for more convivial concerts this summer before hitting the Big Apple.

With several airlines offering budget direct flights from SFO to JFK, there’s really no excuse not to go.
