San Francisco firefighter RJ Schnelker is a finalist in the Coast to Coast Firehouse Cook-Off on “Live! With Regis and Kelly.” He’s in New York to prepare his recipe on the show, airing at 9 a.m. today on KGO (Ch. 7).
How did you come up with your entry’s great name, “Meat Stuffed Meat”? It was from my wife, who wasn’t much of a meat eater. But with beef and pork, meat seemed to take over.
What led you to enter the contest? My wife asked if she could send the recipe and I agreed.
What’s the origin of the dish? I got started with steak and marinade, but in a food town like San Francisco, I had to turn it up. I put together the stuffing, with pork and a few other things.
At what fire station do you work? What have your colleagues said about your win, so far? I’m at the Third and Howard streets station. My co-workers are pretty tough. They gave me quite a bit of ribbing.
Have you been on TV before, and are you nervous? Never for my cooking. I’m a little nervous. I just found out about being on the show.
Will you say hi to Regis and Kelly from San Francisco? I’ll give them a big hello from the West Coast.
