Mayor Ed Lee seeks money to plant fruit trees

Mayor Ed Lee wants the Department of Environment to apply for a grant to pay for fruit trees. Fruit trees were on the mind of his predecessor Gavin Newsom as well.

On Tuesday, Lee introduced a resolution to the Board of Supervisors that would authorize the Department of Environment to submit the application if the board approves.

The City has been invited to apply for the grant by CalFire, according to the resolution, after the state agency reviewed the outlines of the fruit tree project.

It would pay for the planting of “fruit bearing trees on appropriate city property,” the resolution says.

“A project of this type will help the city enhance its urban forest, as well as provide food security,” the resolution says.
