The latest allegations of SFPD police misconduct involving a man at a residential hotel are being taken seriously, Mayor Ed Lee said Thursday, although he was quick to point out that allegations of police stealing people’s property is very rare.
“It’s, in my opinion, it’s somewhat unusual for that to happen, for police to be allegedly taking someone’s personal property like that when I think they’re in there to collect evidence,” Lee said.
Public Defender Jeff Adachi unveiled a new video Wednesday that appears to show a San Francisco police officer taking a bag from a resident’s room in the process of a drug bust. That man, Fernando Santana, reported that his bag containing tequila, coffee and an iPod went missing after the arrest. It wasn’t until this week that his attorney told him that police may have taken it.
“We take Mr. Adachi’s allegations seriously and we’ll see what the evidence bears out,” Lee said.
