Market Street knife attack sends man to hospital

A sidewalk dispute on Market Street escalated into near-butchery late Tuesday when one of the combatants brandished some kitchen cutlery, according to police.

A 25-year-old man and a 54-year-old man had a heated exchange in the 900 block of Market Street, between Fifth and Sixth streets, just before midnight, and the older man then stabbed his opponent in the ribs with a kitchen knife, police said.

A passing BART police unit happened to notice the attack and took the knife-wielding suspect into custody, police said.

The victim was treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
