A South of Market man was awakened early Thursday by two crooks who claimed to be cops, police said.

The 39-year-old resident of the 500 block of Fourth Street called police after the suspects broke into his home just before 6 a.m. The door had been left unlocked, police said.

When the victim woke up, he asked the crooks what they were doing. They were apparently rummaging through his apartment, police Officer Gordon Shyy said Thursday. The suspects claimed to be cops.

Though it was dark, Shyy said, the victim said he recognized one of the suspect’s voices and also that the pair didn’t have anything to identify themselves as police.

Both suspects ended up fleeing with only the victim’s keys. The victim was not harmed, Shyy said, and there were no arrests made as of Thursday.
