  • A bike lock like this one was used to assault a man at a bus stop on Monday.

This might go down as the world’s slowest getaway.

Two 21-year-old men who were wanted for allegedly assaulting an older man with a bike lock at a Geary Boulevard bus stop early Monday reportedly boarded a bus after the attack. The only problem with that strategy, police said, was that the 38-Geary never left.

When the driver saw that the victim was bleeding at the bus shelter, he remained parked, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said. The suspects were still on the bus when police arrived. They were then positively identified as the attackers, Esparza said.

Samuel Broaddus, of San Francisco, and Raymond Sullivan, of Berkeley, were both booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the 2:30 a.m. attack at the Fillmore Street bus stop. Broaddus also was charged with battery.

The incident reportedly began when a woman walked up to Broaddus and asked for a cigarette. For some reason, Esparza said, Broaddus got in the woman’s face and pushed her.

A 54-year-old male bystander who witnessed the incident decided to intervene, Esparza said, asking why Broaddus pushed the woman.

“The victim was speaking softly … he wasn’t yelling,” Esparza said, citing a statement from a witness.

But after exchanging more words with the victim, Broaddus suddenly began beating the man over the head with a bike lock, Esparza said. Sullivan joined in on the beating, according to police.

Broaddus was reportedly in possession of a bicycle at the time. He left the bike leaning up against a wall when he and Sullivan boarded the bus, Esparza said.

When police officers arrived, Esparza said, the victim was lying on the ground bleeding from the head.

He was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
