A 25-year-old man is recovering after being attacked and left unconscious and bleeding in the street during a “large-scale melee” outside a South of Market nightclub early Sunday, police said.
Officers were called to a club in the 600 block of Mission Street just before 12:30 a.m. after multiple witnesses reported a fight involving about 30 to 40 people in the street, police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.
The fight started inside the club — which police did not identify — between several groups of people, including men and women, who were escorted outside by security, according to Esparza.
“Once they were on the street, the parties re-engaged in an altercation which quickly escalated into a large-scale melee — punching, kicking, screaming,” Esparza said.
Police found the most severely injured man lying in the street, unconscious and bleeding from the head, according to Esparza. He was treated at the hospital for injuries that were described as nonlife-threatening. Several others were punched, including a 26-year-old woman who was treated by paramedics at the scene, he said.
Esparza said police were able to track the “primary aggressor” in the fight, through witness descriptions, to nearby Jessie Street, where they detained and later arrested Kenneth Michael Klotovich, 24, of Millbrae.
Klotovich was booked for assault with a deadly weapon, Esparza said.
