A man was assaulted with a hammer by a group of goons in the Richmond on Friday, police said Monday.

The 32-year-old victim was with a group of friends in the 4300 block of California Street about 8:35 p.m. when they were confronted by the group, police Officer Albie Esparza said. The group, three men and one woman, reportedly began cursing and yelling at the victim and his friends.

They ran into a building to get away from the suspects, and as the victim was attempting to close the glass door of the building, one of the suspects struck it with a hammer and broke the glass, Esparza said. The victim was also hit with the hammer.

The suspects then fled the scene on foot.

The victim was taken to the hospital for his injuries, which were not life threatening.

A few people were detained by police nearby, but were not positively identified in the attack, so as of Monday afternoon, no arrests have been made. The suspects were all believed to be in their 20s.
