With 10 separate teams and 84 individuals from San Francisco high schools running in the CIF Cross Country State Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno on Saturday, The City will be more than well represented across eight divisions.
The University girls’ team will look to defend it’s 2009 Division V state championship, led by sophomore Jennie Callan and junior Holland Reynolds, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the D-V state race last year.
Lowell, St. Ignatius, Sacred Heart Cathedral and Urban will be sending both boys’ and girls’ teams.
Lowell won both Academic Athletic Association boys’ and girls’ titles on Nov. 17 at the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park, while the St. Ignatius girls got a bid by winning the Central Coast Section D-III title at Toro Park in Salinas on Nov. 13 and the SI boys finished second in the D-III boys’ race.
Sacred Heart finished second in the CCS D-III boys’ race and third in the girls’ race. The Urban boys earned D-V state bid by winning the North Coast Section championship at Hayward High School on Saturday, and the girls earned a bid by finishing third in their D-V race.
Urban’s Cole Williams took the boys NCS D-V individual title by a margin of 14 seconds, Lowell’s Alex Hillan took the AAA boys title and SI’s Rachel Hinds took the CCS D-III girls’ individual title.
Hinds finished fifth at the state championships last year, but SI finished 18th as a team. Hinds is one of the favorites in the D-III race this year, as only 2009 champ Rebecca Mehra of the Southern Section’s Palos Verdes is the only returning runner that finished higher in 2009.
Lowell will compete in the Division I races, while Urban and St. Ignatius will remain in their respective divisions for the state meet.
Rounding out the team bids is the International boys, who finished third at the D-V NCS race.
While eight teams is an impressive amount of competitors for any city in the state, seven other schools will send runners to compete individually. Lincoln will send three boys and three girls to the D-I race, Balboa sophomore and AAA champion Isabella Bowden will compete in the girls’ D-II race, University will send two boys and Mission will send one for the D-IV race, and Stuart Hall will send one boy and Convent will send one girl to the D-V race.
