When Tim Lincecum takes the hill today to face rising Washington Nationals right-hander Jordan Zimmerman, one pitcher will have a 5.60 ERA and the other a 2.77 ERA. Four months ago, all would assume it would be Lincecum boasting the better ERA. But that won’t be the case.

Lincecum has labored through the worst season of his career, but appears as if he’s possibly turned the corner.

“The Freak” looked like his old self his last time out, limiting the Los Angeles Dodgers to four hits while racking up eight strikeouts over seven scoreless innings. And while the Dodgers aren’t exactly hitting like World Series contenders, the outcome was an important one for Lincecum and San Francisco.

Lincecum will need to keep it going today on the road, where he has been especially vulnerable, going 1-4 with a 7.59 ERA while surrendering seven home runs over just 40¹⁄³ frames.

In the other dugout, Zimmermann finally found out what it’s like to get some run support last time out.

Zimmerman came into the week ranked 49th out of 62 qualifiers in run support, the main reason why he finds himself with just four victories despite posting strong peripherals. But he limited Colorado to just one run over seven innings in his most recent start and the Nationals’ offense took care of business as Zimmermann won for the first time in six starts.

This is the first meeting between the two clubs this season.
