Keep an eye — and ear — out for The Joy Formidable

In the Bands You’ll Be Hearing About in 2011 department, better get ready now for the full-fledged, full-length onslaught of punky Welsh combo The Joy Formidable, who quietly debuted on these shores this year with the great introductory EP “A Balloon Called Moaning.”

Now they’re back — on Canvasback/Atlantic this time — with a flagship single, “I Don’t Want To See You Like This,” and an album, “The Big Roar,” hot on its tail in March. And hands down, blonde bombshell Ritzy Bryan wins the vote as Most Captivating New Frontwoman In Rock.

But The Joy Formidable wasn’t feeling any sophomore pressure.

They tracked the album in their bedroom studio, self-produced it as well, then flew to Los Angeles to mix it with production whiz Rich Costey, of Muse/Glasvegas renown.

Bryan had no trouble with lyrics, either, and says that the new songs explore “the possibility of victory in a hopeless situation.”

Even the record’s artwork stayed in-house: It’s the work of bassist Rhydian Dafydd.
