Trips to the Middle East — and Midwest — gave The City’s legislative branch a break from business as usual this week, and more elected officials are scheduled to go abroad later this month.

The big trip was Board of Supervisors President David Chiu’s junket to Israel. The Jewish Community Relations Council flew the supervisor and 24 others, including San Francisco State University President Leslie Wong and nonprofit and religious leaders, into Jerusalem on April 25. The party is scheduled to arrive in Tel Aviv today before returning to San Francisco over the weekend.

Meanwhile, a pair of supervisors jetted to Chicago on the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce’s dime. First-term supervisors London Breed and Norman Yee accompanied executives from AT&T, Wells Fargo, United Airlines, Recology, PG&E and construction firm Hathaway Dinwiddie to the Windy City.

The trips canceled the board’s weekly meeting Tuesday.

Mexico City — and a study of its bus rapid-transit lines — is the destination for 19 travelers, including three supervisors and a slew of transit officials, over the weekend of May 15-18. Supervisors Scott Wiener, Eric Mar and John Avalos, along with San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency board of directors Chairman Tom Nolan, are hoping to learn lessons applicable to future high-speed bus lines planned for Geary Boulevard and Van Ness Avenue.

San Francisco’s elected officials have been well-traveled of late. Mayor Ed Lee visited Ireland and France in March before going to China, where he spent more than a week in early April.
