Intersection could see calmer traffic

A $35,000 allocation for traffic-calming efforts in the Richmond District could be approved on Tuesday.

The funding would go toward building a new bus bulb at Balboa Street and 37th Avenue, part of the Balboa Streetscape Improvement Project, which runs from 34th Avenue to 39th Avenue. Bus bulbs are extensions of sidewalks at intersections, allowing transit vehicles to pull in and out of traffic easier, while also shortening the distance pedestrians have to walk to cross the street.

The allocation would come from local tax dollars, and is up for approval at the Plans and Programs Committee of the San Francisco County Transportation Authority, a local planning and funding agency. If approved, it would go toward the $2.5 million improvement project being undertaken on Balboa Street. The Department of Public Works is leading the effort.
