India’s ruling party accused of bribing legislators

WHAT: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spent hours on the floor of both houses of Parliament defending himself and his party against harsh criticism over a WikiLeaks cable alleging bribery of lawmakers in the 2008 nuclear deal with the U.S.

HOW: The WikiLeaks posting accused the ruling Congress Party of bribing lawmakers with $2.5 million each for voting in favor of India signing the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. A party official allegedly showed a U.S. diplomat two cases full of cash.

WHY IT’S OUTRAGEOUS: This is only the latest Congress Party corruption scandal. Singh denied any wrongdoing, saying, “We have not been involved in any such transactions, and we have not authorized anyone to indulge in such transactions.”
