Heartless thug nearly beats resident to death in attempted burglary

A 32-year-old San Francisco man was beaten to near-death by a burglar Wednesday, police said.

San Francisco police are hunting the heartless thug who apparently stole nothing after being caught in the act. He took time to assault the victim before fleeing the Portola in-law apartment, police said.

The victim was startled awake when he heard a noise in the apartment on Silliman Street around 11 a.m., San Francisco police Officer Albie Esparza said. He went into his living room to investigate and saw a man in his 30s holding a yellow blunt tool of some sort, Esparza said.

Police weren’t immediately able to obtain a detailed description of the weapon or suspect due to the victim’s condition after the attack.

The crook charged the victim and struck him in the head multiple times with the tool, Esparza said. The victim was also struck on the arm during the attack.

The victim screamed for help until the suspect left in an unknown direction. After the suspect left, he managed to call 911.

The victim was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with a traumatic head injury, Esparza said.

There was no apparent loss of property, Esparza said. The door to the in-law unit was damaged as well as the gate, he said.
