Good Weekend: Living the good life

This week we asked Ian Ross of Mill Valley to tell us a little about himself and his weekend plans.

What do you do for a living? I work as a bartender at Palmetto down on Union Street in San Francisco but in my free time, I’m an artist.

How would you characterize your paintings? It’s abstract and has a graffiti-influence into it. I’ve always been inspired by graffiti. I started painting about four years ago but I have my bachelor’s of fine arts in ceramics.

Ever been inspired to take your brush to a Caltrain? Not yet. I’ve been inspired to do public art work, but nothing that would be considered vandalism. I don’t have the urge to destroy.

What do you plan to do this weekend? Working at the bar, hanging out with friends, going to art shows. My friend just opened an art gallery called Gallery 1988 on Sutter and Polk. She’s been doing really well and I’ve gotten to show my work there. I usually hang out where there are shows. Otherwise, 111 Minna is definitely a place that has artists that inspire me.

Any other passions? I surf about everyday, so I’m always at Ocean Beach. Between painting, surfing and working at the bar, that takes up pretty much all my time.
