He literally yanked his victim’s chain, prosecutors said.
A man was walking down El Camino Real in Redwood City on Aug. 12 when a brash hoodlum allegedly snuck up behind him, grabbed him by the neck and yanked off a $700 chain, prosecutors in San Mateo County said. The cagey criminal then hailed a bus and hopped on, they said.
A good Samaritan who witnessed the crime approached the chainless victim, informing him that he’d seen the whole thing, prosecutors said.
The good Samaritan invited the victim into his car and they followed the bus while calling police. When cops arrived at the scene, they stopped the bus and the good Samaritan and victim identified the chain-yanking perp, a 22-year-old Menlo Park man, authorities said.
Police found the $700 chain in the suspect’s pocket, prosecutors said.
The suspect is in custody on $50,000 bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Monday at 2 p.m.
