A 17-year-old girl was one of two people who were critically injured in vicious stabbings Tuesday, police said.

In the incident involving the teen, officers responded at 7 p.m. to a fight that broke out on Valencia Street between 20th and 21st streets. When the officers arrived, they learned that the 17-year-old had been stabbed and taken by friends to San Francisco General Hospital, police Officer Gordon Shyy said Wednesday.

Investigators said the girl was in surgery before they could interview her about the attack. Her condition has since improved, Shyy said, and she is expected to survive.

No arrests have been reported, Shyy said, adding that the police gang task force is leading the investigation.

At 12:35 p.m. Tuesday, police said, a 46-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries after being stabbed in the neck during a brawl in the Tenderloin.

The suspect, described only as a 40-year-old man, used a pocket knife to attack the victim at Ellis and Hyde streets, police said. The suspect fled before police arrived and no arrests have been reported.
