Giants’ playoff push proves a hot ticket

If you think Matt Cain’s fastball is quick, he has nothing on the speed at which Giants fans snatched up thousands of playoff tickets Tuesday.

Some 15,000 tickets for three potential first-round Giants playoff games were made available for purchase at 10 a.m. By 10:30, they had sold out.

The Giants are in playoff contention, and during the past few weeks have battled the San Diego Padres and the surging Colorado Rockies for the National League West Division title. In the next 12 days, the Giants have to play both teams, and the outcomes of those series will likely determine who secures a spot in the postseason.

Meanwhile, the Giants are keeping an eye on the NL wild-card race — their other opportunity to make it to the playoffs — with the Atlanta Braves leading the pack.

Though the Giants still have to prove their mettle to make it to the postseason, hordes of fans are prepared if they do.

Giants season-ticket holders had to commit to purchasing postseason tickets by Sept. 10. Between those sales and blocks of tickets set aside for advertisers and others, a mere 5,000 seats per game in 42,000-seat AT&T Park were available for sale to the general public.

And those, which ranged in price from about $20 for bleacher seats to $150 for seats right behind the dugout, were snatched up within half an hour, Giants spokeswoman Staci Slaughter said.

At this point, Giants fans who want to guarantee they have playoff tickets have just one option: They must put a deposit down toward tickets for next year, Slaughter said.

If fans can handle that $500 price tag, they will be guaranteed a seat to watch their boys in orange and black battle for the pennant.

But first, their boys have to get that far.
