If San Franciscans are hitting the road this holiday weekend, they will have more money for Independence Day celebrations if they purchase their gas outside The City’s limits.
Local gas stations are charging $3.24 per gallon on average — 9 cents higher than last month and 15 cents higher than last year. However, the state average is $3.01, which is only a penny higher than it was last year and a month ago, according to the AAA.
“That doesn't surprise me at all,” said Scott Morrison, 57, who was pumping gas at a 76 Station where the price has been $3.45 per gallon. “Even just across the bridges, it’s cheaper. I try to gas up in Berkeley,” added Morrison, who commutes between Berkeley and The City several times a day for his construction job.
Driving up San Francisco prices are not greedy owners, said AAA spokeswoman Cynthia Harris, but simply that the cost of doing business in The City is more expensive, due to factors such as higher rents and wages.
AAA is predicting 4.1 million people will drive more than 50 miles from their homes over the Fourth of July weekend, a 19.3 percent increase from last year. National forecasts predict 34.9 million will drive over the weekend, a 17 percent increase from last year.
“Honestly, I just don’t pay attention. I have to pay it anyway, and it's the difference of a couple of pennies,” said Anastasia Holbrook, 26, who drives from Walnut Creek to The City for work five days a week.
