Fundraiser tonight for hikers imprisoned in Iran

Local authors will hold a fundraiser in San Francisco tonight in support of three University of California at Berkeley graduates captured last year in Iran, two of whom remain imprisoned there.

The event will raise money to support the return of Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, who have been held by Iranian authorities since July 31, 2009.

Bauer's fiancee, Sarah Shourd, was released in September due to health problems.

The three were detained near the Iranian border with Iraqi Kurdistan, where they had been hiking.

Tonight's event, which takes place at 7:30 p.m. at the Verdi Club at 2424 Mariposa St., features readings by Daniel Handler, creator of the Lemony Snicket stories; Andrew Sean Greer, author of "The Story of a Marriage"; and Katie Crouch, author of "Men and Dogs."

There is a suggested donation of $20. For more information, visit www.freethehikers.org.
