Possible charges against an 18-year-old transient in the alleged sexual assault of a teenage tourist near Fisherman’s Wharf are pending as prosecutors await the results of forensic evidence, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Christopher Dutel is accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old foreign tourist early Tuesday morning after the teen split from her tour group at a 7-Eleven store. She was reported missing about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, and police found her more than an hour later in the bushes with Dutel in the 400 block of North Point Street, which is between Taylor and Mason streets.

The girl and Dutel were transported separately to the hospital, police said. Their injuries were not life-threatening, police Sgt. Daryl Fong said.

Dutel was later booked into County Jail on suspicion of sexual assault and false imprisonment.

The District Attorney’s Office confirmed Wednesday that Dutel is a transient from Southern California with no fixed address in San Francisco.

A transient told The San Francisco Examiner on Tuesday afternoon that he saw the girl with a young homeless individual at the 7-Eleven on Mason Street early that morning and that she appeared to be intoxicated.

News of the alleged assault stunned the Fisherman’s Wharf community, which neighbors and merchants call safe. They said the incident appears to be isolated.
