First woman takes Golden Gate Bridge engineer position

For the first time in its 73-year history, the Golden Gate Bridge will have a woman as its chief engineer.

Ewa Bauer, a native of Poland with more than 30 years of experience in civil engineering, will take over from Denis Mulligan, who was named executive director of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District earlier this year.

Bauer has been with the bridge district for the past 16 years, all of which she spent as the deputy chief engineer. Prior to joining the district, she worked for Caltrans.
