Fiery three-car collision in Oakland delays evening commuters

A three-car, hit-and-run collision in which one vehicle was engulfed in flames exacerbated traffic delays in Oakland today during the evening commute, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

One man suffered minor injuries in the crash, which was reported at about 5:30 p.m. on southbound Interstate Highway 880 north of 16th Avenue, Officer Ralph Caggiano said.

The man was taken to Highland Hospital for treatment, Caggiano said. It was unclear how the fire started or what type of injuries the man sustained.

The left three lanes of southbound I-880 were closed for about an hour and 15 minutes while officers investigated the crash, according to the CHP.

Traffic that was already backed up for the evening commute was further delayed by the crash, Caggiano said.
