Alioto-Lazio Fish Company
WHERE: 440 Jefferson St.
WHAT: The wharf like it was in the old days
INFO: (415) 673-5868 or www.crabonline.com
This is the place to get live, fresh Dungeness crab and a sense of truly old San Francisco. You can buy crabs live, cooked, or cracked and cleaned, and you can cook ’em yourself. It’s set back from the street about 20 feet, so look for it.

WHAT: A secret garden for kids
INFO: (415) 292-2003 or www.parkscan.org/parks?parkId=18
It’s a small, colorful, safe playground with a spongy play surface. Compact and fenced so you never lose track of where the grandkids are. Kids love it because there are so many fun things to do.

WHAT: The best gourmet burger I’ve ever tasted
INFO: (415) 440-UMAMI or umamiburger.com/union
They grind their own meat to make specialty burgers you can get with their homemade ketchup. Sides of fries, onion rings, pickle plate, salads and tater tots. My favorite is the scallop burger, which comes with pork belly.

WHAT: Local source for freshwater crawfish
INFO: (415) 752-7413
Every year, my wife and I set up a neighborhood party in our backyard where we boil crawfish and barbecue homemade sausage. We get 100 pounds of live crawfish and boil them in batches. They’re messy, spicy and fabulous!

Rose’s Café
WHERE: 2298 Union St., at Steiner Street
WHAT: Italian comfort food in a warm and inviting atmosphere
