Dummy grenade causes stir in Visitacion Valley

Police evacuated several homes and blocked off a street in Visitacion Valley after a resident told police she found what she thought was an explosive in her home — but it turned out to simply be a dummy grenade.

Police received a call in the middle of the afternoon Monday from a resident on the unit block of Tioga Avenue, between Goettingen and Rutland streets. She told them she found what appeared to be an old explosive in her home, police Officer Samson Chan said.

Police evacuated the home and the adjacent houses and shut down traffic on the street while the bomb squad responded, Chan said.

Ultimately, police discovered what appeared to be a grenade was in fact a dummy grenade, perhaps used for training.

By 4:30 p.m., traffic had reopened and residents were allowed to return to their homes, Chan said.
