Dum Dum Girls’ Kristin ‘Dee Dee’ Gundred kicks up the production

Dum Dum Girls bandleader Kristin “Dee Dee” Gundred has always loved the lo-fi garage rock and plush girl-group sound of the ’60s.

But the Raybanned, black-leather-jacketed ultracool kitten was tired of recording her all-gal outfit by herself, DIY style, as she did on the debut “I Will Be.” So for the band’s retro-hip new “Only In Dreams,” she pulled out all the production stop.

The Dum Dum Girls retreated to Josh Homme’s Pink Duck studio, and brought in not one, but two top-notch knob-twiddlers, Raveonettes mastermind Sune Rose Wagner plus the brilliant punk-scene veteran Richard Gottehrer, of Ramones/Blondie/Go-Go’s renown.

Gottehrer, in fact, recently went on record, praising Gundred as the next Chrissie Hynde. He also intended “Only In Dreams” as a showcase for her stunning star-quality talents. And you can sample the results of this unconventional teamup at www.wearedumdumgirls.com, in the Spector-jangly track and video “Bedroom Eyes.”

Dee Dee and cohorts (guitarist Jules, bassist Bambi, drummer Sandy) may look like the gorgeous Tura Satana-led gang from “Faster, Pussycat! Kill, Kill!” But they’re tough as nails and — just like Satana’s vicious Varla — ready to snap your spine in a heartbeat.

Catch them on the way up this Tuesday at Great American Music Hall, with Gundred’s husband Brandon Welchez’ equally great combo Crocodiles opening.
