Dianne Feinstein for fourth term in Senate

Dianne Feinstein is seeking a fourth term in the U.S. Senate, and The San Francisco Examiner happily endorses her for re-election.

The senator has a long record of supporting key issues that impact California and the region, including support for mass-transit funding, efforts to help homeowners refinance their underwater mortgages, expansion of public lands and wilderness areas throughout the state, and support for pipeline safety upgrades to prevent another incident like the 2010 San Bruno blast.

Although she is a moderate Democrat, Feinstein has pledged to continue pushing for a repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, which she voted against when it was passed during the Clinton administration. The proposal she is backing does not grant same-sex couples the rights that they should have to marry in every state, but at least it would be a step toward granting them the same federal benefits given to all other married couples.

The former San Francisco mayor is a Democrat who has served long enough to know how to work across the aisle on important issues. But she also is seasoned enough to stand her ground against right-wing ideologues who push for radical changes to social programs and important governmental spending. San Francisco is lucky to be represented in Washington by someone who combines her tenure with such traits.
