Today is decision day for the Giants on the Guillermo Mota front.

Unless the Giants already have made up their mind.

In that case, today is the day the Giants must make a move with the reliever, who is coming off a 100-game suspension as a second-time offender of Major League Baseball’s drug policy.

Before teammate Melky Cabrera was busted for a positive testosterone test, it seemed a no-brainer Mota would rejoin the Giants once his suspension ended. But it’s a different climate in the Bay Area in general and with the Giants in particular now that Cabrera and, a week later, A’s pitcher Bartolo Colon were suspended 50 games apiece for their positive tests for testosterone.

Over the weekend, the Giants were weighing the pros and cons of bringing back Mota, who has given up three earned runs in 6¹⁄³ innings for Triple-A Fresno in preparation for a possible call-up.

If it truly would be a baseball decision, they’d bring him back in a heartbeat because the bullpen has struggled recently like never before this season.

But it’s more than a baseball decision. The Giants also must weigh the negative fallout from the Cabrera fiasco and how fans would react to Mota being summoned in the seventh inning of a close game.

Would they be on his side? Would they boo?

It’s a tough call.

According to the drug policy, Mota must be activated today, and the Giants have two choices: Put him on their 25-man roster or designate him for assignment.

However, if the Giants designate him for assignment and he winds up back at Fresno, the club could call him back up after rosters expand Saturday.

NOTE: San Francisco’s Buster Posey (67) and Hector Sanchez (25) have combined for 92 RBIs while behind the plate, tops among catching teammates in the major leagues.
