Death is second fatal boating incident

A man who died Friday evening after the sailboat he was on capsized in rough conditions off the coast of Half Moon Bay was the second fatal incident of the Thanksgiving weekend.

The victim was one of two men, both in their 40s, on the 34-foot  sailboat, which overturned at about 4:25 p.m. Friday just south of Pillar Point, U.S. Coast Guard Lt.  j.g. Jeremy Pichette said.

The Coast Guard launched two boats and a helicopter as part of a joint rescue effort after receiving a report that a flare was spotted in the area. Pillar Point Harbor patrol, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, the Half Moon Bay Fire Department and state parks officials assisted in a shoreline search.

Harbor patrol officers managed to rescue one man shortly after the flare was spotted, Pichette said. His exact condition wasn't immediately available, but Pichette said he is expected to survive.

A Coast Guard helicopter spotted the second man at 5:37 p.m. and harbor patrol managed to pull him from the water, and immediately administered CPR, Pichette said. He was taken to Seton Coastside Hospital in Moss Beach and was pronounced dead by local paramedics, Pichette said.

Pichette said the men were not wearing life jackets or full-body immersion suits.

The Coast Guard is reminding mariners that the National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory, which will remain in effect through Saturday morning, and that mariners should avoid the water if they can.

"Even the most experienced mariner can be faced with a situation that they may not be ready to handle,'' Pichette said.

Beachgoers are also being urged to keep a safe distance from the waterline.

The incident Friday afternoon off Half Moon Bay marks this Thanksgiving weekend's second fatal boat accident in the Bay Area. On Thursday, an elderly couple died after their boat capsized in the waters off Bodega Bay.

The Sonoma County coroner's office said Friday evening that their identities are being withheld pending notification of their families.
